Refurbishment of a traditional Japanese genkan (entrance hall) blended touches of modern minimalism with the warmth of natural wood. Using a colour progression from dark grey down to white on top of the textured walling contrasted perfectly with the rich reds and browns of the structural beams and window surrounds. A floor of white pebbles and pale concrete paving provided the ideal setting for a small water fountain in one corner, while an oversized gilt picture frame offered the spotlit focal point.
